La Fortuna is the name of a village that discovered,in July of 1968, that it (they) had been sleeping next to a volcano. In 1968, Arenal erupted and wiped out the comunities of Tabacón and Pueblo Nuevo. Since then hundreds of thousands of tourists visit La Fortuna to witness the power of the volcano.
