Refugio de Vida Silvestre Arenal Oasis

This   wonderful place is the results of several years of conservation, allowing to a different species of animal a new home; at the beginning of the 80’s was a big cattle field and now it is a paradise for Sloths, Mexican Anteater, Gray Fox, Ocelots, howler Monkeys, Toucans, Manakines, Hummingbirds, Turkeys, Tree Frogs, Glass Frogs and Poison Dart Frogs, Snakes, Lizards and much more...

Accomplishing this rich natural environment, the Rojas Bonilla family created a thematic trail of a several stations all along the refuge, where the visitors get a speech about natural history of the species.

 

Birds Watching Tours.

Our refuge counts with an exuberant birds gallery of about 200 species, including some migratory species on certain seasons. But the most important thing is that most of them live right here all year round and you can see them all day long. You have the opportunity to take the tour at different times of the day; our first official tour starts at 5:30 am. And requires previous reservation and as a reward for those early risers we will include breakfast, although you can also take the tour at any time during the day.

Night Walk In The Forest.

On this tour you have the opportunity to see the other face of the forest and experience that side of the nature that not everybody knows. This night walk starts just before dark and the main subjects are insects, reptiles and amphibious, nocturnal mammals, glowing fungi, spiders and more. Also one of the main attractions is the “Cantarrana” or “Frog Song”, where you learn about the amphibious history and some of the most popular nocturnal species like the glass frog, the red eye tree frog, the bullfrog, the facemask frog and other jewel of the forest. This tour starts at 5:45 pm, at the refuge.

Natural History Walk.

This super tour includes all the subjects of the refuge. We will talk about tropical plants and we will visit our butterfly garden to learn about the butterflies and their cycle of live, survival techniques, functions in the forest and more, after that we will proceed to enter our trails where we have different stations with insects, tarantulas, snakes, lizards and frogs. On each one of this you will learn about the relationships in between them and the nature, importance and functions in the ecosystems, importance for the human beans and others.
This tour starts at the refuge at 8:00 am , 10:00 am , 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm

Butterfly Garden

In our Butterfly Garden there are more than 15 species of butterflies, where you can enjoy of all different stages of their life cycle. They are not only beautiful but also they have a very important function in nature. We’ll learn about their changes and metamorphosis faces of their short life, survival techniques, like camouflage, mimetic, symbiotic relations and more. Our tour starts at 8:00 am, 9:00am, 10:00am, 11:00am, 12:00pm, 1:00pm, 2:00pm, and 3:00pm, it last about an hour and you will have enough time to take pictures after the tour guide ends with the short speech.

Butterfly Garden

In the surrounds of our installations you can find a great variety of tropical plants, they hold a lot of great secrets to tell you, like medicinal uses, food, odors, and more, also we will explain the relation tico-culture with plants like, cocoa, sugar cane, guanabana, cinnamon, mint, pineapple, citronella, star fruit, nonis, achiote, and some others that will give you an unforgettable experience. This tour starts at your own schedule and last about an hour.
